Navigating Emotions | Youth Leadership Curriculum

Emotions are incredibly powerful. At times it can feel like we are at their mercy.

This series encourages teens to look at their powerful emotions in light of the Bible. How can we learn to feel our emotions, but also not let them overwhelm us? How can we avoid the downward spiral of negative emotions, and instead find productive outlets that lead to a healthy emotional life? Obviously we can’t cover all of that in 4 weeks, but as we study the book of Esther together, we hope to give your teens a few tools for navigating the often troubled waters of emotions.

OVERVIEW

WEEK 1: STEPPING INTO THE VORTEX
Feelings are not right or wrong, but what we do with them can be. In this lesson we discuss how God loves our authenticity, and wants to guide us through our emotional moments. In Jesus, we are never alone in our emotions.

WEEK 2: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
It is easy to get stuck in a downward spiral of emotions. This week we discuss three negative ways we can get sucked into that spiral, and how to challenge and lead ourselves to do something productive with them instead.

WEEK 3: LEADING THROUGH EMOTION
Our emotions can help us lead others as well. As we learn from our own experience of following Jesus with our emotions, God will often open doors for us to help others with similar emotions.

WEEK 4: JOY AND CELEBRATION
Times of celebration should not be overlooked. Joy is a good gift from God that we should appreciate and revel in. Just as we learn to be comfortable in the hard emotions, we should learn to embrace the good.
